TELRO – 2010 is proud to announce that, the Inaugural Keynote Address shall be presented by H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General, TRA.

“The telecom sector in the region witnessed vast expansion in the past ten years coupled with increasing demand and rapidly evolving technologies. This proved to be challenging but also presented opportunities in terms of market growth and business investments. Although, we are fairly a young telecom market in terms of competitive maturity, we are steadily moving more and more into sector de-regulation. TRA is working on providing the optimal platform for its telecom sector to benefit from the world-wide expansion and growth of this vital sector.

H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General, TRA (Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, U.A.E)

TELRO – 2010 has taken the initiative. It is an event with its root deeply embedded into the route planning suggested by the industry think tanks. Historically, telecommunications revenues have increased after every crisis since the 1970s. Policymakers understand that TELECOM sector has traditionally shown financial resilience and can help rejuvenating the Region’s entire economy. Our best examples come not very long ago.

The “Argentinean crisis” where Argentina entered a recession in 2000 and it peaked in 2002, with GDP falling by 10.8 percent, unemployment reaching 23 percent, and inflation at 26 percent. Telefónica de Argentina aggressive measures were crucial to the company’s survival and allowed it to become a life line for the entire economy. The Turkish economy experienced a recession around the same time, with very high inflation but the telecom sector actually offered significant growth potential during this period.  Theyt were proactive in their countermeasures and took advantage of the opportunity responded by drastically reducing its cost and stuck up cash.  Like Argentina and Turkey, Japan saw strong devaluations of its currency in 1997–98, as well as devalued stock markets and a substantial increase in private debt. The country sank into a recession in 1998. NTT DoCoMo was not hindered by economic conditions and it took aggressive measures and came on top of the situation.

What is imperative for operators is to respond to their specific situation with the optimal combination of bottom-line, top-line and balance sheet measures. Regional operators will need to learn from these examples and embrace specific development strategies if they intend to outlast the crisis. They must work on cutting unwanted expenses, releasing held up cash and using convergence of services and products to attract more market share.
