The Gulf is the most water scarce region in the world. However, due to the huge developments as well as population growth, more waste water has been created, putting immense pressure on existing water resources.
However, population growth is not the only driver of new wastewater capacity. Across most of the region, the existing STP infrastructure is over 20 years old and incapable of meeting today’s demand, both in terms of handling volumes and treating effluent to international standards. It has become a priority, therefore, for utility providers across the region to take existing plants out of service and replace them with new capacity.
Following the Economic downturn, the GCC market is expected to be back on track by 2010. The Governments in GCC countries have exhibited strong political will to continue investing in important infrastructure projects. Environmental and health hazards related to the disposal of untreated effluent, marine pollution, and deteriorating ground water quality are some of the issues that are keeping market prospects alive. Though these forces have been overshadowed by short-term concerns, they are expected to positively impact market dynamics from 2009 to 2013.

The International Private Water Association (IPWA) was formed in 1999 to address the changing dynamics taking place in individual countries around the world within the context of the evolving water/wastewater infrastructure project and service arena. The Association serves as a conduit between the public and private sector players - facilitating effective timely dialogues that highlight the critical need for speed, transparency and cost-effectiveness in the development/operations of global water and wastewater projects, and the practical means for achieving those elements in projects. More importantly, IPWA is uniquely recognized as one of the few independent organizations that address, as a central part of its mission, the potential expanding role of the private sector as a viable partner to governments and parastatals within the global water/wastewater project and service arena.
