Diabetes is a global threat, researchers estimate that 366 million people, or 4.4% of the world’s population will be diabetic by 2030. Diabetes prevalence in some countries in the ME Region is among the highest in the world. Studies conducted in different populations have reported prevalence rates as high as 20% in the United Arab Emirates, 16% in Qatar and 15% in Bahrain.
Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan underlined the need for global action: “Across the world, the threat [of diabetes] is ignored and under-funded. Tackling diabetes must be a priority. It is so serious that we all have to be involved if we are to reverse this epidemic.” The human and economic costs of this epidemic are enormous, diabetes increases the risk for heart disease and other health problems, and therefore it is important to give this disease more attention.
The purpose of this forum is to bring together international experts from International health organizations, national health authorities, local diabetic associations, academics, and local, regional and global media to:
- Highlight the rising prevalence of diabetes and its complications in the world in general and in the middle east in particular
- Discuss the recent issues related to prevention, management and treatment of diabetes.
- Develop global and national strategies to reduce the socio-economic burden of diabetes.
- Create a network of committed global and regional key opinion leaders to exchange their knowledge and experiences and by this way contribute to overall improvement of patient care.
